What is a travel eSIM?
A travel eSIM is a digital SIM with a prepaid data plan for your trip. You install it with a QR code and keep your usual SIM for calls and texts.
An eSIM is a SIM built into your phone. Instead of inserting a plastic card, you download a mobile plan to the phone, usually by scanning a QR code.
How a travel eSIM works
A travel eSIM gives you a prepaid data plan for a country or a region, with a set amount of data for a set number of days. You install it before you leave, switch it on when you arrive and use it for mobile data, while your usual SIM stays in the phone.
Why travellers use one
Predictable cost: you know the price of the plan before you travel, instead of paying roaming charges.
No SIM swapping: your usual number can stay active for calls and texts.
Ready on arrival: install it at home and get online as soon as you land.
Things to know
Your phone must support eSIM and must not be locked to one carrier. See Is my phone eSIM compatible?
Most travel eSIMs are data only: they come without a phone number for regular calls and texts. Messaging and calling apps work over the data connection.
An eSIM can usually be installed only once, so keep it on your phone until your trip is over.
