How to install an eSIM on iPhone
Install a travel eSIM on an iPhone with its QR code or by entering the details manually, then set it up for mobile data abroad.
These steps apply to recent versions of iOS. Menu names can differ slightly between versions and languages.
Before you start
Connect to a stable Wi-Fi network: the eSIM is downloaded over the internet.
Make sure your iPhone supports eSIM and is not locked to one carrier. See Is my phone eSIM compatible?
Show the QR code on another screen or print it. If the code is on the same iPhone, use the manual setup below.
Install with the QR code
Open Settings and tap Cellular or Mobile Data.
Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan.
Choose Use QR Code and scan the code.
Follow the prompts, and give the new line a clear label such as Travel.
Install manually
If you cannot scan the code, tap Enter Details Manually on the scanning screen. Type the SM-DP+ address and the activation code that came with your eSIM exactly as written — they are case-sensitive.
Set it up for your trip
Under Cellular Data or Mobile Data, choose the travel eSIM.
Turn on Data Roaming for the travel eSIM when you arrive — travel plans usually need it.
Keep your usual line for calls and texts, or turn it off to avoid roaming charges from your home carrier.
Keep the eSIM installed
Do not delete the eSIM while you still need it: most eSIMs can be installed only once. If something does not work, see eSIM troubleshooting.
