About Steam verification
Steam accounts are created with an email address, and Valve lets you add a phone number afterwards for account recovery and extra security. When you add one, Steam texts a code to confirm it. Do this from the Steam client or website with your activation page open so you can enter the code immediately.
Day to day, Steam relies on Steam Guard — ideally the authenticator in the Steam mobile app — rather than SMS. Keep your recovery details on contact methods you own: a verification number expires after the activation window and cannot help you recover a compromised account. Follow the Steam Subscriber Agreement.

Is a phone number required to use Steam?
No. It is optional, but Valve recommends one for recovery and some security features.
Does this replace the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator?
No. Steam Guard is set up in the Steam mobile app on a device you control.
Can I remove the number later?
Yes, from the account details page in Steam you can change or remove the phone number.
